SIOUX CITY, Iowa — President Donald Trump rallied more than a thousand supporters in Sioux City on Thursday night, pressing Iowans to back Republican Ashley Hinson in a U.S. Senate race that has turned surprisingly tight less than two weeks before Election Day.

Hinson, a congresswoman since 2021, is running against Democratic state Rep. Josh Turek for the seat opening up with Republican Sen. Joni Ernst’s retirement. Trump carried Iowa by about 13 points in 2024, yet the race is now one of six toss-up Senate contests Republicans are working to hold.

Trump called Hinson fantastic and brought her onstage, where she told the crowd Turek is too liberal for Iowa. The president pointed to his record on the border, taxes and the economy, and announced his administration would use the Defense Production Act to free up $150 million to expand refining of diesel and gasoline. He also promoted an $8 billion diesel relief fund for farmers, saying about $400 million in refunds would go to Iowa.

High energy prices and the fallout from last year’s trade war with China, which saw Beijing stop buying American soybeans, have weighed on the state. Hinson has begun putting some distance between herself and the president, saying during a debate this month that she would back him when it is good for Iowa but challenge him when needed.

Outside the arena, several longtime Trump voters said they still support Republicans but are frustrated by stubborn prices and gridlock in Congress. Republican governor candidate Zach Lahn and congressional candidates Chris McGowan and Joe Mitchell also spoke at the rally.
