Born on March 1, 1944, in Sioux City, Iowa, Heck was the son of William Ernest Hageman and Maxine Claire Buck. After his mother remarried Clarence “Chuck” Heck, the family relocated to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he later graduated from Brainerd High School. Heck continued his education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, earning his Bachelor’s degree in 1968. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army, and during this time, he officially changed his surname to Heck, earning an officer’s commission and receiving an honorable discharge in 1971.

Determined to serve justice, Heck pursued legal training at the University of Tennessee’s Winston College of Law in Knoxville, successfully earning his Juris Doctor and gaining admission to the Tennessee Bar in 1974. He carved out a niche as a small firm practitioner specializing in criminal defense, rapidly establishing himself as one of Hamilton County’s most respected attorneys. Over his nearly fifty-year career, he defended clients across a wide range of criminal charges, notably including high-profile death penalty cases.

Memorial Services

Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects on June 20, 2025, from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel. A chapel service in his honor will follow at 1:00 p.m., with interment at Chattanooga National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m., where he will be laid to rest with full military honors.
