Varnell is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Edwina Varnell, as well as his parents, Charles D. and Annie Lee Varnell. He is survived by his only son, Christopher, and daughter-in-law Jane. In addition to his immediate family, Varnell took great pride in his two granddaughters, Amelia Pruett and Christina Varnell, and his four great-grandchildren: Andrew, Kyle, Abigail, and Graham. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Betty Jones.
A proud alumnus of Chattanooga High School, Varnell furthered his education at the University of Chattanooga, now known as the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He served his country for four years in the United States Air Force during the Korean War, an experience that contributed to his strong sense of duty and commitment to service.
Career and Community Involvement
Charlie spent a significant part of his career in the trucking industry before transitioning to Norfolk Southern, from which he eventually retired. His professional journey showcases his hard work and dedication throughout the years.
Aside from his professional accomplishments, Varnell was an active member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for more than 70 years, reflecting his deep-rooted faith and commitment to community service. He also contributed time and effort towards the Cumberland Youth Foundation (CYF), an organization dedicated to youth development. In addition to these commitments, he was a well-respected member of Turner Tennis Club, where he admired the camaraderie and competition of the sport.

In the wake of his passing, the family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to The Tennessee State Veterans Home and Hospice of Chattanooga for their compassionate care during Varnell’s final days.
