Chattanooga – A local man has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting that took place on Wednesday afternoon. The suspect, 34-year-old Demontra Quintez Collins, is accused of killing 27-year-old Jamel Daeshun Sutton during a confrontation in the 1200 block of North Hickory Street. The incident was reported to police shortly after 3:30 p.m. when gunfire erupted.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found Sutton suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso behind an apartment building. Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Collins contacted emergency services, stating that he and Sutton had been involved in an exchange of gunfire. Police were able to locate Collins shortly thereafter. He voluntarily produced a ‘Draco’-style firearm, which was identified as the weapon he used during the shooting.

Authorities have determined that Collins and Sutton had a confrontation just three days before the shooting incident. According to Collins, he approached Sutton, who was outside a parked vehicle with a gun in his hand. However, witnesses at the scene indicated that Sutton was in the process of adjusting a child’s car seat at that moment.

Collins later claimed that he did not see a firearm with Sutton until he was already near him. According to the police report, during the confrontation, Sutton fired at Collins twice with a 9mm pistol while Collins responded by firing approximately 12 rounds at Sutton.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation as authorities work to determine the specifics of the incident. It is still uncertain who fired their weapon first during the exchange of gunfire. Collins has not provided answers to inquiries regarding the reasons for confronting Sutton while armed.

As a result of the shooting, Collins has been charged with criminal homicide, a serious accusation reflecting the nature of the incident. The community is grappling with the aftermath of the violence, and local police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the events or has additional information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.

In recent years, gun violence has been a concerning issue in many urban areas, and incidents like this serve as a somber reminder of its tragic impacts. The loss of Sutton brings to light the need for dialogue and action surrounding gun safety and conflict resolution measures in the community.

This case will likely progress through the legal system in the coming weeks, with Collins facing serious accusations that could lead to significant legal consequences if he is found guilty. The investigation will continue as law enforcement officials seek to piece together the events that led to this tragic outcome.
