Chattanooga Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Community Member: Eddie Lee Whitlock, Sr.

The city of Chattanooga is coming together to remember a cherished figure within the community, Eddie Lee Whitlock, Sr., who sadly passed away at the age of 74 on January 31, 2025. Eddie’s life was a tapestry woven from love, service, and an unwavering commitment to family and friends. His journey from Gulfport, Mississippi, to Chattanooga is a story of dedication, hard work, and a joyful spirit that will be missed but never forgotten.

A Life Rooted in Faith and Community

Born in Gulfport but raised in Chattanooga from a young age, Eddie accepted Christ early on, shaping his strong spiritual foundation. He grew up attending both Prospect Missionary Baptist Church and Union Grove Baptist Church, where he formed lifelong friendships and grew his faith.

Eddie was not only a man of faith but of pride, especially when it came to his education. A proud graduate of Howard High School’s Class of 1970, he played the trumpet in the Marching 100 Band, showcasing his love for music and teamwork during his school years.

Service to the Nation and Community

After high school, Eddie took a step many commendable men take and proudly served his country in the United States Army. Upon completion of his service, he transitioned into a successful career with the Buster Brown Company, where he worked for over 20 years. He was known far and wide for his strong work ethic and friendly demeanor, leaving a lasting impression on colleagues and customers alike.

Even after retirement, Eddie didn’t slow down. He worked part-time at Food City grocery store, where he quickly became a familiar and friendly face, always ready to share a smile and a story with the customers who came through the door.

A Passion for Life’s Simple Joys

Eddie was a man of many interests, and he loved to spend time outdoors. Whether he was fishing, cooking up a delicious meal, or playing a round of pool, he embraced the simple pleasures of life. His friends often brought him fresh catches, and he took joy in cleaning and cooking them to perfection. His cooking was often the highlight of family gatherings.

Not only was Eddie passionate about food, but he also had a green thumb. He took pride in landscaping and maintaining beautiful yards and flower beds, often using his skills to beautify his friends’ homes too. His personal touch made every garden bloom and brought smiles to those he loved.

Travel and Family First

Traveling was another love of Eddie’s life. He cherished visiting family who lived out of town and looked forward to the annual family reunions, where laughter, stories, and love filled the air. Family meant everything to Eddie, and his devotion was evident in every interaction.

A Loving Family Left Behind

Eddie Lee Whitlock, Sr. leaves behind a loving family, including his devoted wife of 42 years, JoAnn Whitlock, and three sons: Montez, Eddie Lee Jr., and Christopher Whitlock. He also has a brother, Charles J. (Tawana) Whitlock, Jr., and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, as well as many friends who will miss him deeply.

Final Farewell

The community is invited to pay their respects at a public viewing on February 11, starting at 10 a.m., followed by a heartfelt funeral service at 12 p.m. at Prospect Missionary Baptist Church, located at 734 Dodson Ave. Eddie will be interred at Chattanooga National Cemetery with full military honors, honoring the service he gave to his country.
