Community Remembers Audrey J. Henderson: Beloved Matriarch and Author Passes at 68

Chattanooga, TN – The vibrant community of Chattanooga is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished members. Audrey J. Henderson, known for her warm heart and creative spirit, passed away on February 3, 2025, at the age of 68 following a brief illness. Audrey, who was born on July 4, 1956, was the fourth of five children in her family and dedicated many years of her life to being a loving daughter, sister, aunt, mother, friend, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

From her early days, Audrey was a devoted member of the Alton Park Church of Christ, where she was baptized and actively participated in song groups across various congregations. She graduated from City High School in 1974 and went on to attend the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC). While studying at UTC, she began her long career in the banking industry, working at American National Bank. Her journey took an exciting turn when she became a USAF military spouse, allowing her to travel to many different places and embrace diverse experiences around the globe.

Audrey had a remarkable career in banking and finance, taking pride in her work until her retirement in 2015. However, her passion for reading and writing would soon take center stage in her life. An avid reader since her teenage years, she fell in love with romance novels, which inspired her to become an accomplished author. Her notable works include “Number One Priority,” “The Basics of Love, Aim High!,” and “Planet Selexa.” Through her storytelling, she shared her imaginative world with readers, earning a special place in their hearts.

Family values were at the core of Audrey’s life. She cherished the time spent with her children, granddaughters, great-grandson, and her beloved pets. She had a nurturing spirit that extended beyond her immediate family, remaining close with her friends and other loved ones. Audrey is lovingly survived by her son, Berdell E. (Melissa) Lindsey, III, from Colorado Springs, CO, and her daughter, Tracy (Kavon) George, from Converse, TX. Her legacy continues through her granddaughters, Harper Lindsey, Kyra, and Ahlissa George, as well as her great-grandson, Sawyer LaBrick.

Despite her passing, Audrey’s spirit lives on with her three brothers and a sister who are also from Chattanooga, along with an uncle from Atlanta. She leaves behind a fond circle of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, and her dear pets, Chole and Chancy. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, Lillie M. Foster Henderson and Carey L. Henderson, Jr., and her sister, Constance L. Henderson Grant, as well as her grandparents and several aunts and uncles.

A service in her memory is set for March 1, 2025, at Ponders Brainerd Chapel in Chattanooga. The event will celebrate Audrey’s remarkable life with a eulogy delivered by Bro. Phillip G. Henderson, along with officiating ministers Bro. Lethaniel Garner, Bro. Andre Massengale, and Bro. Louis Gillespie. Friends and family are invited to join for a musical tribute starting at 11 a.m. before the service, a chance to remember and honor the beautiful life she lived.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Audrey’s memory can make donations in her name to the Alton Park Child Development Center, San Antonio Humane Society, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Her final arrangements have been entrusted to Ponders Brainerd Chapel, where her family invites the community to reflect on the love, inspiration, and kindness she imparted throughout her life.

Audrey J. Henderson touched so many lives, and her legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
