Chattanooga, TN – Dr. Lori Mann Bruce has been recommended to become the next chancellor of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), making her the first woman in the institution’s 138-year history to hold this position. Pending approval from the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees, Bruce’s official start date is scheduled for June 30, 2023.

This appointment follows a comprehensive national search aimed at finding a successor for interim Chancellor Robert Dooley, who has been serving since January 1, 2023, after Chancellor Steve Angle stepped down following more than a decade in office. Bruce’s selection comes at a pivotal moment for UTC as it seeks to enhance its academic leadership and strengthen its role within the Greater Chattanooga community.

UT System President Randy Boyd has expressed strong support for Bruce, highlighting her dynamic leadership and proven commitment to student success as essential qualities for UTC’s continued growth. Bruce’s prior role as provost and vice president for academic affairs at Tennessee Tech has prepared her for this new challenge. During her tenure, Tennessee Tech reached record-setting levels of research growth, expanded academic programs, and oversaw more than $350 million in campus construction projects.

Under her leadership, Tennessee Tech also achieved a historical milestone by receiving a perfect academic quality score from the Tennessee Higher Education Commission for the first time in over 40 years. This achievement showcases her ability to drive academic excellence and foster an environment conducive to impactful learning and research.

A native of Tennessee, Bruce holds a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering and brings experience from her work at both Mississippi State University and Tennessee Tech. Her research focus on hyperspectral remote sensing and precision agriculture positions her well to guide UTC’s academic initiatives and strategies.

Bruce has articulated her commitment to a student-first approach, emphasizing the need for transparency, ethical technology usage, and community engagement. This vision resonates well within the university and local communities, as student body representatives advocate for leadership that prioritizes their needs and aspirations.

Beeta Baghaevaji, the newly elected president of the UTC Student Government Association, has noted Bruce’s strong connection with students throughout the chancellor search process. This rapport is expected to facilitate a more inclusive and responsive leadership style at UTC. Furthermore, Professor Erin Ryan has endorsed Bruce’s appointment as a significant step forward for women’s representation in higher education leadership roles.

State Senator Bo Watson welcomed Bruce’s experience and leadership, anticipating that her skills will greatly benefit UTC in the upcoming years. As Bruce prepares to take on her new role, her plans include focusing on enhancing student success, establishing UTC as a regional leader, and improving marketing efforts to share the university’s story more broadly.

In summary, the recommendation of Dr. Lori Mann Bruce as the first female chancellor of UTC signifies a historic moment for the university and an opportunity for innovative leadership aimed at fostering student success and engaging with the Chattanooga community.
