East Ridge, Tennessee – A father has been arrested for child endangerment after police discovered seven young children living in the back of a U-Haul truck. Brandon Blount, a 39-year-old man from Nevada, was apprehended by East Ridge Police following a 911 call concerning a white male loading children into the vehicle along Interstate 75 North.
Officers conducted a traffic stop at the East Brainerd Exit, where they found two children in the front and five children in the back storage compartment of the U-Haul. The ages of the children ranged from 3 to 12 years old. Initial reports indicated that the rear area of the truck emitted a strong odor of urine and that some of the children were discovered to have lice.
According to police, Blount had originally rented a car but changed to a U-Haul after the rental period expired. He told officers that he was in the process of transporting his children from Las Vegas to an apartment in Chattanooga. However, he struggled to provide clear information regarding how long they had been in the truck. It was noted that the children had been inside the vehicle since around 8:00 PM on March 24th and had only made two brief stops before the police intervened the next day at approximately 2:20 PM.
The police found the children unrestrained in the back of the truck, lacking proper ventilation and communication with the front. The temperature in the back of the U-Haul was recorded at over 88 degrees Fahrenheit, a concerning condition for the well-being of the children. Following the traffic stop, all of the children were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluations; they were reported to be in good health.
Brandon Blount now faces multiple counts of child endangerment and child neglect. The Department of Children’s Services has been informed of the situation and is likely to take further action regarding the children’s custody and welfare. Blount remains in the Hamilton County jail, held on a $12,500 bond, and is scheduled to appear in court on June 3rd.
