Secondly, the principals advocate for a joint funding framework with the school board to enhance transparency and accountability in how education funds are managed. Lastly, the letter calls for a meeting between school leaders and local officials to address the potential impacts of proposed budget cuts on students’ educational experiences.

This appeal comes shortly after the Hamilton County school board approved a budget for the 2025-26 academic year that confronts a $16.2 million budget shortfall. This deficit is largely attributed to disappointing local tax revenues and a remarkable rise in health care costs, totaling $12.5 million.

The approved budget, which still requires approval from the Hamilton County Commission, includes several drastic cuts to address the financial challenges. The district plans to eliminate half of a principal’s position in every school and feels it necessary to reduce benchmark testing from three times a year to just one. In total, the central office will experience a reduction of $5.3 million, alongside the termination of 46 central office staff positions, resulting in an 11% staff reduction. In contrast, the school-based staff will see a reduction of only 3%.

School administrators have expressed concerns about the budget cuts and their detrimental effects on students. The reductions will likely result in the loss of critical roles including counselors, academic tutors, interventionists, and essential support staff in schools, which are vital for maintaining a healthy and effective learning environment.
