Construction work at I-75 I-24 interchange in Chattanooga

News Summary

Chattanooga, TN is set to experience significant traffic disruptions this weekend as road construction at the I-75 and I-24 interchange leads to a full closure of I-24 East. The construction, part of a Phase 2 project for widening, is anticipated to create delays. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes and stay informed about traffic changes to ensure safety during this period.

Chattanooga, TN – Major traffic disruptions are anticipated this weekend due to road construction activities at the I-75 and I-24 interchange in Hamilton County. The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) stated that a full directional closure of I-24 East near Exit 183 will occur from Friday, June 27, 2025, at 9:00 pm ET to Monday, June 30, 2025, at 6:00 am ET. This construction is part of Phase 2 aimed at widening and improving the interchange.

The closure is essential to connect new construction with the existing elevation of I-24 East, which is expected to enhance traffic flow and safety in the area. As crews undertake this critical work, significant delays are likely. Motorists are advised to consider alternate routes and to avoid the area if possible to mitigate congestion.

Prior to the full closure, lane closures will take place on South Terrace on Friday, June 27, from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm ET to prepare for the weekend’s construction work. During the full closure of I-24 East, drivers will be rerouted using the Germantown Road exit ramp to access a temporary alignment on South Terrace, allowing them to rejoin I-24 via a temporary entrance ramp.

Traffic management will be enhanced during the construction period with uniformed police officers present to assist with traffic control and law enforcement. All drivers are encouraged to be vigilant and to follow posted signage, as traffic conditions may change rapidly.

The construction schedule is heavily dependent on weather conditions, and there may be delays or rescheduling due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances. To aid in their travel plans, motorists are urged to utilize motorist information tools, such as the TDOT SmartWay Map, which provides updated information about construction activities and traffic conditions. Additionally, drivers can call 511 for statewide travel information, ensuring they can make informed decisions about their routes.

As drivers approach the area, they should remain particularly alert to changing traffic conditions and adhere to all instructions from traffic officers. Furthermore, it is crucial that motorists avoid distractions; they should refrain from texting, tweeting, or making phone calls while driving to ensure their safety and the safety of others on the road.

Authorities are also reminding the public about the Move Over Law in Tennessee, which necessitates that drivers move over for emergency and service vehicles on the roadway. Violators of this law face penalties of up to 30 days in jail and fines as high as $500. Compliance with these regulations is vital not only for personal safety but also for the safety of emergency responders working in close proximity to traffic.

With major disruptions expected, local motorists should plan ahead and consider alternative routes this weekend as construction progresses at the I-75 and I-24 interchange. Staying informed and prepared is essential to navigate the upcoming changes smoothly and minimizing the impact of construction on travel plans.
