Chattanooga, Tennessee – The community is grieving the loss of Loretta Elizabeth Mayfield Owens, a cherished matriarch known for her strong faith and vibrant personality, who passed away peacefully on June 22, 2025, at the age of 78. Loretta’s unwavering spirit and dedication to her family and church have left an indelible mark on the lives of those who knew her.

Born on April 15, 1947, in Pell City, Alabama, Loretta was the beloved daughter of the late Lula Mae Crowe and Frank Mayfield. She is also predeceased by her brother, Bobby Crowe, her sister, Geraldean “Jerry” Hyter, and her beloved companion, Henry Christian. Loretta is survived by her daughter, Shineena Owens, and was a proud grandmother to four grandchildren: TaSherryia (Sherri) Owens, LeDarius Owens, Angelique Owens, and Victoria Lewis. Additionally, she was a devoted great-grandmother to 13 great-grandchildren and leaves behind a large extended family including nieces, nephews, and friends.

A dedicated member of Union Grove Baptist Church, Loretta was widely respected for her unwavering faith, sharp wit, elegance, and inherent strength. Her love for her community and family was evident in the way she lived her life and engaged with those around her. Loretta earned a degree in cosmetology, fulfilling her dream of working in a local salon where she not only showcased her professional skills but also spread joy through her infectious laughter and friendly demeanor.

To honor Loretta’s life and contributions, a public viewing is scheduled for Tuesday, July 1, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the local funeral home. Following this, a celebration of her life will take place on Wednesday, July 2, at Union Grove Missionary Baptist Church, located at 4100 Hughes Ave., Chattanooga. The interment will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery, with a gate time set for 2 p.m. The arrangements for the service have been entrusted to John P. Franklin Funeral Home, located at 1101 Dodds Ave., Chattanooga.

This gathering will provide an important opportunity for family, friends, and community members to come together in remembrance of a woman whose impact will be felt for generations to come. Loretta’s life was a testament to resilience, love, and the power of faith, leaving behind a legacy that reflects her values and the many lives she touched.

As the community prepares to celebrate the life of Loretta Elizabeth Mayfield Owens, her family and loved ones are encouraged by the many memories and the significant legacy she leaves.
