Mary was born in the Ringgold, GA area, where she also attended school. A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga, TN area, she spent her earlier years working in various jobs, including factory positions and housekeeping at Erlanger Hospital. However, the majority of her life was dedicated to being a homemaker—a role she regarded as her greatest accomplishment. Mary devoted her life to ensuring her loved ones were happy and cared for, becoming known for her loving nature that made everyone feel welcomed in her presence.

Simple pleasures brought Mary joy; she delighted in coffee, yard sales, and family gatherings. Above all, it was the unity of her family that filled her heart with the utmost happiness. Her legacy is described as profound and far-reaching, touching the lives of many throughout her community.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Daisy Eledge; her husband of 31 years, Frank Smith III; her son, Michael Smith; her daughter, Christie Smith; her brother, Jerry Eledge; and her sisters, Marilyn Westbrook and Teresa Thompson. She is survived by her companion of almost 20 years, Ricky Blaylock, who resides in Hixson, TN. Additionally, Mary is survived by several children: Frank (Amy Jo) Smith IV, Thomas Smith Jr., Daisy (John) Smith, Amie (Chris) Humphreys, Randall, Anthony, and Eric Smith, all residing in TN and AL. She also leaves behind numerous grandchildren, including Frank V, Cody, Morgan, Emily, Buddy, Hunter, Jimbo, Aslenn, Hali, Zachary, Mckala, Riley, Amelia, Haily, Alyssa, and Lulu, as well as many great-grandchildren.

Mary’s surviving siblings include Donnie (Brenda) Eledge, Gloria (Danny) O’Neal, Wanda Lindner, and Linda Teters. Among her close friends was Darla Holbert, who shared countless memories with Mary. The family expressed gratitude toward Hearth Hospice, Tennessee Oncology, CHI Memorial Hixson, and other providers who assisted in her care during her final days.

A visitation for Mary will take place on Saturday, October 25, 2025, from 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm at Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services Franklin-Strickland Chapel in Chattanooga, TN. A celebration of life service will follow the visitation at 2:30 pm. Arrangements are entrusted to Advantage Funeral & Cremation Services.
