East Ridge, Tennessee – A tragic multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 75 claimed the life of one individual and left three others critically injured on Sunday evening. The crash involved six passenger vehicles and one tractor-trailer and occurred shortly after 5:20 p.m. near mile marker 1.2, leading to significant traffic disruption that lasted several hours.

Lane Smith, a 23-year-old resident of Fayetteville, Tennessee, was pronounced dead at the scene. His three younger siblings, Baleigh, Brynlee, and Sawyer Smith, sustained critical injuries in the collision; Baleigh and Sawyer are currently receiving treatment in Chattanooga, while Brynlee was airlifted to Nashville for more intensive care. 61-year-old David “Jeff” Huggins from Dawsonville, Georgia, was also identified as a second fatality from the crash.

The semi-truck driver involved in the accident, 65-year-old Joseph Antoinier from Georgia, has been charged with two counts of reckless homicide after failing to slow down, resulting in a collision that caused two of the vehicles to catch fire. In total, three adults are reported to be in intensive care, and while two children were also critically injured, they survived the incident. Additionally, two individuals were treated for minor burns they sustained while attempting to rescue victims from the flames of the vehicles.

Emergency personnel responded swiftly to the incident, focusing on lifesaving measures and performing multiple extrications to free those trapped in the wreckage. Their prompt actions helped mitigate further injuries and loss of life. Despite the significant chaos caused by the crash, traffic on the affected stretch of I-75 was restored by early Monday morning.

As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing, authorities are collaborating closely with the East Ridge Police Department to gather more information and determine the factors leading to this devastating accident.

In response to the tragedy, a GoFundMe page has been launched to cover the funeral expenses for Lane Smith and medical costs for the surviving family members. This effort highlights the community’s commitment to supporting those affected by this heartbreaking event.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers present on the roads and the potential consequences of reckless driving. Motorists are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety on the highways to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
