Kenneth Andrew Royse, former president of Chattanooga Gas Company, passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at the age of 90. His impactful career and dedication to the community left a lasting legacy in the Chattanooga area.
Royse was born on June 10, 1934, in Chattanooga and attended local public schools. He graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1952 and went on to earn a B.S. degree in business administration, majoring in accounting, from the University of Chattanooga (now the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga) in 1956. During his college years, he began his career with Chattanooga Gas Company in 1955, taking on roles as a dispatcher, customer service representative, and general accounting clerk.
Following his graduation, Royse served a two-year tour of duty with the U.S. Army in Germany, specializing in the Office of Intelligence. Upon completing his military service in 1958, he returned to Chattanooga Gas Company and continued his career as a junior accountant, steadily climbing the ranks due to his dedication and skill. He was promoted to company auditor in 1962 and further progressed through the company, becoming assistant treasurer in 1967, assistant vice president and treasurer in 1974, vice president and treasurer in 1976, and ultimately the president of the company in 1989.
In addition to his contributions to Chattanooga Gas Company, Royse was a member of various professional associations, including the Southern Gas Association, Southeastern Gas Association, Tennessee Gas Association, Chattanooga Manufacturers Association, and the Rotary Club of Chattanooga. He played significant roles within these organizations, notably serving as the Accounting Section Chairman of the Southern Gas Association and president of the Tennessee Gas Association. His commitment to his profession extended to public service as well, as he served on the board of directors for the United Way and Pioneer Bank in Chattanooga.
Personal Life and Family
Kenneth Royse was preceded in death by his parents, Ezra and Vinnie Irene Royse, his daughter Regina Landry Holland, and siblings Betty Jenkins and Kathleen Hilliard. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Paulette Royse, originally from New Orleans, as well as two sons, Chris (Melanie) and Alan Royse. In addition, he leaves behind 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Memorial Services
The family will welcome friends on Friday, May 2, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a celebration of life service will be held at 6 p.m. in the chapel, officiated by Pastor Dale Lovelady. Arrangements are being handled by the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, located at 8214 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
