After his mother remarried Clarence “Chuck” Heck, the family relocated to Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he later graduated from Brainerd High School. Heck continued his education at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, earning his Bachelor’s degree in 1968. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army, and during this time, he officially changed his surname to Heck, earning an officer’s commission and receiving an honorable discharge in 1971.
Determined to serve justice, Heck pursued legal training at the University of Tennessee’s Winston College of Law in Knoxville, successfully earning his Juris Doctor and gaining admission to the Tennessee Bar in 1974.
