CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The city of Chattanooga has replaced its online map viewer with a new version that officials say will save the city $17,000 annually while giving residents more ways to look up city services and data.
The newly launched Chattanooga GIS Map Viewer includes layers of mapped assets tied to the city, including zoning districts, neighborhood associations, public safety information, land ownership details and city services. The layers are built to give a broad view of the city and the ability to drill down into specific details.
Some headings and tool names have changed, but the new viewer keeps the functions users of the old platform will recognize. The biggest visible change is 3D modeling that replaces the old street view.
Data layers now include traffic, weather warnings, stream flows, precipitation forecasts and alternative fueling stations, plus impervious surface maps and tree canopy mapping created in partnership with UTC.
A new Near-Me widget lets users calculate assets around a spot of interest, such as the nearest recycling center or the number of city parks nearby. Most map layers are now updated with live service data, so information should refresh more often than it did in the previous version.
Will Stuart, the city’s GIS analyst, said the map viewer will have a unique view for both mobile and desktop users, so residents checking zoning or city services on a phone get a layout built for smaller screens. The viewer is live now on the city website for anyone researching a property, a neighborhood or nearby public services.
