GREENSBORO, N.C. — Chattanooga volleyball blocked better than it had all season but still came home empty-handed Saturday, as UNC Greensboro swept the Mocs in three sets, 27-25, 25-14, 25-23, at Bodford Arena.
Two of the three sets came down to two points. In the opener, the Mocs erased a big deficit and earned a set point at 25-24 before the Spartans scored the final three points. Chattanooga also held a late lead in the third set, but UNCG closed with a run as Mocs attack errors piled up.
The middle set got away early. With the score tied, the Spartans ripped off a long run of unanswered points and never looked back.
Sophomore Jordin Glass led Chattanooga with eight kills and matched her career best with eight total blocks. Destiny Wiggins set a career high with seven blocks, and Kynli Kirkendoll added seven blocks and six kills. Caiti Barthel had a team-best 12 digs. As a team, the Mocs finished with 14 blocks, their most this season.
The Spartans outkilled Chattanooga 50-29 and also won the dig battle 45-28. Allie Sweet put down 14 kills with four aces, and Hailey Clifton added 12 kills for the Spartans, who have won six straight league matches.
The Mocs have now dropped five in a row to UNCG, although they still lead the all-time series 37-27 after 64 meetings. Head coach Julie Torbett Thomas said her team blocked well and singled out Glass for a strong match.
The loss drops Chattanooga to 6-17 overall and 1-10 in the Southern Conference, tied with The Citadel for ninth. UNCG is 15-7 and 8-3. The Mocs return to Maclellan Gym to host Tennessee Tech at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
