Tennessee Promise Deadline Nears for Class of 2027 Seniors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — High school seniors across Tennessee have less than a week left to sign up for Tennessee Promise, the state scholarship that pays tuition and required fees at community and technical colleges. The application window for the class of 2027 closes Nov. 2.

The program works as a last-dollar award. It picks up whatever tuition and mandatory fees remain after Pell grants and other gift aid are applied, and it can be used at any of the 13 community colleges, the 22 Tennessee Colleges of Applied Technology or another eligible school that offers an associate degree.

Students should budget for what the scholarship leaves out. Housing, books and personal expenses are not covered.

Filling out the short Promise form also brings a second benefit. Through the TN Direct Admission program, applicants get a letter listing the participating colleges, 63 in all, that have already admitted them, so they can compare options without sending separate applications to each school.

Applying is only the first step. To keep the award, students must file the 2027-28 federal student aid form, known as the FAFSA, by April 1, 2027, attend a mandatory meeting run by their assigned partner organization, and put in 16 hours of volunteer work annually. Seniors in the class of 2027 may count service hours completed since Aug. 1, 2025, with the first 16 due by Aug. 1, 2027.

The 2027-28 FAFSA opened Oct. 1, 2026, and families will use 2025 tax information to complete it. Some state and federal grants are handed out first come, first served, so filing early can matter. Seniors who finish high school early and want to start in the spring can use an early graduate checklist to enroll right away.
