Chattanooga Paving Work Hits St. Elmo Streets Oct. 19-23

HERE BREAKING

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Drivers in south Chattanooga, Tenn., should plan around paving crews next week, as the city repaves a long list of streets in Council District 7 from Monday, Oct. 19, through Friday, Oct. 23.

The city public works department lists these stretches for new asphalt: Fagan Street from Workman Road to E 37th Street; Fairoak Place from Everett Street to W 40th Street; Old Mountain Road from Roy Street to St. Elmo Avenue; and Tennessee Avenue from W 40th Street south to the Georgia line.

Also on the list are W 14th Street from Market Street to Cowart Street, W 37th Street from Tennessee Avenue to Broad Street, W 45th Street from Tennessee Avenue to Guild Trail, and the dead-end runs of W 46th Street off Alabama Avenue and W 53rd Street off Sunnyside Avenue. One District 8 job, 4th Avenue from E 24th Street Place to E 28th Street, is folded into the same week.

No full road closures are planned, though crews may have to shut Old Mountain Road entirely because its lanes are so narrow. Some driveways and intersections could close for short periods, and single-lane closures are possible, so drivers should slow down near work zones.

Much of the work lands in and around St. Elmo, the historic Victorian-era neighborhood at the foot of Lookout Mountain whose main corridor runs along St. Elmo and Tennessee avenues. The community grew up as a streetcar suburb between the 1880s and 1910s, sits in ZIP code 37409 and clusters around the lower station of the Incline Railway, so visitors headed to the railway may also run into crews next week.
