CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — People who could not land a ticket to the Tivoli Theatre’s reopening shows in Chattanooga will still get to watch. A free two-night block party on Broad Street, set up between 7th and 8th streets on Oct. 20 and 21, will put bluegrass star Billy Strings on big outdoor screens while he plays inside the restored hall.
Both of his concerts are sold out. Outside, merchandise sales open at 4:30 p.m., the party starts at 5 p.m. and the stream begins at 7:30 p.m. No concert ticket is needed, and food and a bar will be on hand, though entry itself costs nothing.
The Tivoli Theatre Foundation, which runs the hall, said most of the people who bought tickets live within 50 miles of the city, helped by a presale set aside for locals. The outdoor stream is meant to widen that circle further.
The more than 100-year-old theater closed in 2022. Construction did not get underway until 2025, delayed by the pandemic and rising building costs, and foundation events moved to the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium and Walker Theatre in the meantime. The restoration falls under a $75 million plan to build out a Tivoli Performing Arts Center, and it covers new fire protection, building systems and accessibility along with repaired plaster, decorative finishes and the marquee. Work on the larger arts center continues.
The theater has already lined up a 2027 Broadway season of six shows and close to 40 performances starting in February. The reopening caps a busy month downtown, coming soon after the Walnut Street Bridge reopened following an 18-month, $47 million renovation.
