PHOENIX — Outside groups have poured roughly $18.8 million into the general election fight for Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, one of the state’s two most competitive House seats, with most of it aimed at helping Republican Jay Feely.
Feely, a former Arizona Cardinals kicker and a longtime friend of President Donald Trump, faces Democrat Amish Shah and Libertarian Monica Alponte on Nov. 3. The seat is currently held by Republican Rep. David Schweikert.
Federal Election Commission filings through Oct. 22 show groups spent about $1.5 million promoting Feely and about $10.1 million attacking Shah. On the other side, about $1.1 million went to supporting Shah and about $6 million to attacking Feely. The biggest single general election spender so far is the Congressional Leadership Fund, at about $5.4 million. Counting the primaries, independent spending in the race has passed $24.5 million.
Trump has endorsed Feely, but the candidate skipped the president’s Oct. 14 rally in Bullhead City, as did Republican Rep. Juan Ciscomani, who is defending the state’s other highly competitive seat. Trump did not mention either man during that stop. Back in April, both spoke from the stage before Trump at a Phoenix rally.
Several Republicans running in competitive Arizona congressional races have changed their campaign websites since the July primary, taking down some images or mentions of Trump.
