Character

Downtown is the most walkable district in the Chattanooga MSA, with a Walk Score above 80 in the core blocks. The Tennessee Aquarium and Tennessee Riverpark draw significant visitor traffic year-round. The restaurant and bar scene along Market Street and the Southside is the most concentrated dining corridor in the region. Residential loft conversions and new mixed-use development have added several thousand residents since 2010.

History

Originally Ross's Landing, established in 1816 as a Cherokee trading post by John Ross, the site became the point of Cherokee removal in 1838 during the Trail of Tears. Incorporated as Chattanooga in 1839, the downtown became a railroad and industrial center after the Civil War. The 1990s Tennessee Aquarium opening and Riverpark development catalyzed a nationally noted downtown revival that continued through the EPB gigabit fiber buildout in 2010 and ongoing mixed-use development through the 2020s.
