Hixson occupies north Hamilton County in ZIP code 37343, north of the Red Bank city limits, east of Highway 27, and south of the Middle Valley and Soddy-Daisy communities. Chester Frost Park, on the south shore of Chickamauga Lake, is the primary outdoor amenity. The Hixson Pike corridor parallels Highway 27 through the heart of the community.

A mature suburban community with a mix of 1960s–1990s ranch-style and split-level homes and newer infill. The commercial corridor has shifted from retail-dominant to a mix of medical offices, restaurants, and service businesses since Northgate Mall's decline. Greenway Farms and Chester Frost Park provide significant green space.
History
Hixson developed through the post-World War II suburban expansion of Chattanooga, accelerated by the construction of Highway 27 north and the proliferation of automobile-dependent development patterns. The community incorporated informally as an unincorporated census-designated place within Hamilton County.
