Character

A combination of historic summer estates, mid-century homes, and newer construction on large wooded lots. The resident population is small — approximately 2,000 on the TN side — but the mountain draws an outsized tourist economy through Ruby Falls, Rock City, and the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park battlefield at Point Park.

History

Lookout Mountain gained national prominence during the Civil War Battle of Lookout Mountain (November 1863), sometimes called the 'Battle Above the Clouds.' Post-war tourism development followed, with Rock City and Ruby Falls opening in the 1920s–1930s. The mountain became the most-visited tourist attraction in the southeastern United States through mid-20th century advertising campaigns.
