St. Elmo occupies the southern end of Chattanooga in ZIP code 37409, bounded by Lookout Mountain to the west and south, St. Elmo Avenue running east-west as the main commercial spine, and the broader Alton Park community to the east. The Incline Railway lower terminus sits at the corner of St. Elmo Avenue and Ochs Highway.

History
St. Elmo was developed in the 1880s as a planned streetcar suburb, taking its name from the popular Augusta Jane Evans novel. The Incline Railway, opened in 1895, provided direct access to the tourist and residential development on Lookout Mountain above. The neighborhood was annexed by Chattanooga in 1929.
